WINning on the World Stage: A Legacy of Strength and Progress
By alicia pringle
As we reflect on the incredible journey of women in the Olympic Games, the 2024 Paris Olympics stands as a testament to how far we've come—and how much further we still need to go. From the early days of trailblazers to today’s record-breaking performances, women have continuously pushed the boundaries, challenging outdated norms and paving the way for future generations.
The 70s & 80s: Laying the Groundwork
The 1970s marked the beginning of a significant shift in women’s sports. In the 1972 Munich Olympics, around 1,000 women competed—just a fraction of the more than 6,000 male athletes. Despite the disparities, female athletes like Olga Korbut and Nadia Comăneci defied expectations. Their stunning performances not only captivated the world but also began to shift the narrative, proving that women were a force to be reckoned with on the global stage.
The 1980s continued this momentum, with the inclusion of the women’s marathon in 1984 and synchronized swimming in 1988. Yet, the fight for equal recognition and opportunities persisted. Events were often shorter for women, and coverage was minimal compared to their male counterparts. These years were as much about celebration as they were about continuing the push for gender equality in sports.

These years were as much about celebration as they were about continuing the push for gender equality in sports.
The 90s & 2000s: Breaking Through
The 1990s heralded a new era for female athletes, highlighted particularly by the U.S. women’s soccer team’s World Cup victory in 1999. This decade marked a turning point, with more women participating in the Olympics and the addition of new sports that provided greater visibility. The 2000 Sydney Games further elevated women’s sports, but the challenges of equal pay, media bias, and recognition remained prevalent.
2010s & Beyond: The Fight for Equality Continues
The 2010s witnessed a revolution in how female athletes were perceived and how they used their platforms. Social media became a powerful tool for advocating change, exposing injustices, and demanding better treatment for women in sports. The #MeToo movement brought critical attention to issues of abuse and harassment, forcing the sports world to confront uncomfortable truths.
The 2012 London Games were groundbreaking, with women competing in every sport for the first time. Fast forward to the 2016 Rio Games, and now the 2024 Paris Olympics, where athletes like Simone Biles, Rebecca Andrade, Ariarne Titmus, Katie Ledecky, and Jordan Chiles continue to redefine excellence. The Paris Games showcased the highest level of female participation ever, underscoring the strides made toward gender equality in sports.

Looking Forward: The Road Ahead
While we celebrate the remarkable progress, the journey toward true equality is far from over. The 2024 Paris Olympics have set a new standard, with an equal amount of men and women participating and a strong focus on diversity and inclusion.
The Olympics have always been more than just a competition—they’re a global stage where the best and brightest come to inspire. Just as we cheered for the incredible women in Paris, let’s also commit to continuing the fight for equality, ensuring that every woman, regardless of her sport or background, has the chance to achieve her Olympic dreams.

More Than Just a Uniform: The Evolution of Women’s Olympic Attire and Media Portrayal
By Alicia Pringle
from body-focused to spotlights on strength
For decades, women athletes have faced a double standard at the Olympic Games, judged not only on their athletic prowess but also on their appearance. Yet, in recent years, we’ve witnessed a powerful transformation in both the attire worn by female athletes and how they are portrayed in the media.
There was a time when women’s Olympic uniforms seemed more focused on media appeal than functionality. Whether it was the camera’s focus on beach volleyball bikinis or gymnastics leotards, the emphasis often felt misplaced, with attention drawn to the athletes' bodies rather than their incredible skills. It was as if the Olympics were at risk of becoming more of a fashion spectacle than a celebration of athletic excellence.
But the narrative is changing. Today, female athletes are choosing attire that prioritizes comfort, functionality, and performance. Take, for example, the German gymnastics team, who made headlines at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by donning full-body unitards instead of traditional leotards—a bold statement against the sexualization of women in sports. Similarly, we’ve seen athletes in track and field opting for longer shorts, and the inclusion of hijabs and turbans as athletes from all backgrounds compete on their terms. This evolution in athletic wear is a powerful message: women are here to compete at the highest level, not to conform to outdated expectations.
Beyond the Body: Shifting Media Portrayals
The shift in media portrayal has been equally significant. In the past, coverage of women’s sports often included sexist commentary, objectifying camera angles, and a focus on appearance rather than athletic achievements. However, there has been a noticeable change in recent years. Today, the focus is on the athletes’ skills, their inspiring journeys, and the barriers they’ve overcome to reach the top.
We’ve seen this shift in the way coverage for events like women’s gymnastics, beach volleyball, and swimming is evolving to focus on the athlete’s strength and grit – not their outfits. Finally, Olympic commentary for the likes of Simone Biles, Rebeca Andrade, Ariarne Titmus, Katie Ledecky, and many more athletes is squarely on their athletic achievements, resilience, and contributions to their sports – rather than outdated speculations on whether they’ll have kids or keep competing. The 2024 Paris Olympics is continuing this forward-momentum, with coverage that highlights the stories of determination and excellence rather than reducing athletes to mere aesthetics.

Still a Work in Progress: The Road to Equal Representation
While we celebrate this progress, it’s important to acknowledge that the fight for equal media coverage and fair representation isn’t over. There are still moments where old biases rear their heads, and the struggle for equality in sports continues. But one thing is certain: women athletes are no longer willing to be sidelined or silenced. They are demanding the respect they deserve and proving time and again that they are more than “just a pretty face”—they are champions in every sense of the word.
As we look to the future, let’s continue to support and celebrate the women of the Olympics who are breaking down barriers and redefining what it means to be a female athlete. Their strength, determination, and courage inspire us all and remind us that with the right mindset, anything is possible.

Kate the Great
by nikki guillette
Anyone else a big “William & Kate” fan like I am? My fandom doesn’t extend to all royals – just those two. Maybe it’s my generation, as I am just one year older than they are. Maybe it’s because my mom was a huge Diana fan, so it came through osmosis. There’s just something about Kate, specifically, that makes her story and their family so endearing and relatable. Even though my life is nothing like hers in reality, growing up it seemed like we went through many of the same typical life experiences at the same time.
However, she was never more relatable to me than this year, when we were both diagnosed with cancer at the same time. More specifically, we both had “abdominal surgery” in January for a “non-cancerous condition”, only to find a surprise later and undergo subsequent treatment. It’s remarkable how much medical technology is capable of, but at the same time there is so much that is unknown.
I fully recognize that she is a public-facing person, and the information released by her office is minimal and controlled. There is always more to the story with any person than what we see. However, the things that were reported provided some inspiration to endure the challenges and persevere. They indicated that no matter how crazy the situation seemed now, that normal life would eventually return. She exemplified the fact that this was just a season of life, and she (and me) would get back to her obligations, as well as the things she enjoyed, in due time.
Celebrating the little wins is important. I felt so happy for her (or maybe for myself) when she appeared on the balcony at Trooping the Colour. Her beaming smile and her happy family were symbols of triumph. I have an idea of what this year probably entailed for her physically, mentally, and emotionally. This year has especially taught me how to make decisions under difficult circumstances with limited information. It has also taught me that you are capable of more than you think, and that your attitude can have a huge effect on yourself and others.

FIT@Newfold Wellness Workshop with Gen Nutting
BY lauren robinson
FIT@Newfold recently hosted a Wellbeing Workshop with health and fitness coach Gen Nutting. Gen walked participants through some exercises and tips to “make wellness a reality.”
The session began with a (cameras off!) guided meditation. Once we were all grounded, we dove right into the meat of the workshop. Then she asked us a difficult question: “How do ‘to do’ lists make you feel?”
With a bit of reframing, we came to understand that “to do” lists can mean different things for different people. Some people find them helpful; some find them stressful. But what’s really important is the distinction between goals and visions. Goals are short term; visions are long term.
Once we took some stress off ourselves with the “long term vs short term” thinking, we shifted to the self. Gen asked another question: “When are you aligned with your most authentic self?”
This led to an activity where we individually took some time to list out what makes us feel most authentic.
We all left the workshop feeling focused, empowered, and ready to bring our authentic selves to the rest of the day.
Interested in taking some time out of your workday to check in with your own wellness? Gen will be back on Sept. 12 at 11am with Habits, Routines, and Time Management Strategies. Sign up here!

Over the past 3 months, we've racked up over 63 million steps! And with 100 participants (64% being women!), it has been a global movement of epic proportions. This event wraps up at the end of August and the top 10 steppers get a prize!
But it not just about the numbers (although those are pretty darn impressive). We have shared memes that practically walked themselves, pictures that proved we were serious about getting those steps in, and encouragement for everyone.
Along the way, we ALL:
- Sharpened our focus: Walking increases blood circulation to the brain, supplying it with essential nutrients and oxygen, resulting in improved concentration, sharper focus, and enhanced productivity.
- Kicked stress to the curb: Walking can help alleviate mood and negative thoughts and can even lower activity in the part of the brain that's linked to negative thoughts.
- Not to mention the physical: Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance.
It has been a win-win-win for everyone involved. Now, a drum roll for some highlights...
Here's the Lowdown:

WIN Member Spotlight with Paola Lorenzo: Embracing Culture and Community at Newfold
In the bustling world of corporate dynamics, finding fulfillment isn't always easy. However, for Paola Lorenzo, Public Relations Manager here at Newfold, it's been a transformative journey of discovery and belonging. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Paola to delve into her experiences at Newfold, her role, and how affinity groups like WIN have shaped her career and personal life.
Lauren Robinson: Paola, thank you for joining me today. Let's start by talking about your journey at Newfold. What led you here and how has your experience been so far?
Paola Lorenzo: Thank you, Lauren. It's a pleasure to be here. I actually just celebrated my two-year anniversary at Newfold, and it's been quite a whirlwind. From my very first interview with Nicole Cassis, who heads our Communications team, I knew this place was special. It's the first time in my career that I've felt genuinely happy and fulfilled at work. Nicole has been instrumental in guiding me to where I am today, and I'm incredibly grateful for that.
LR: Nicole sounds like an incredible mentor and leader. How has her influence impacted your career trajectory?
PL: Nicole has not only been a champion for me personally but for all women at Newfold. She's been pivotal in creating a supportive environment where everyone's contributions are valued. I wouldn't be in my current role without her guidance and belief in my potential.
LR: Speaking of culture, how do affinity groups like WIN contribute to the overall workplace environment at Newfold?
PL: WIN and other affinity groups at Newfold play a crucial role in fostering a sense of community and belonging. As a member of WIN and Hispanics/Latinos at Newfold, I've found a space where my cultural background is celebrated. It's not just about professional growth but also personal connections. For instance, sharing holiday recipes and cultural experiences has been incredibly enriching.
LR: That sounds wonderful. How do these groups help employees, especially in a male-dominated industry?
PL: They provide a support network that's invaluable. In an industry where women are underrepresented, having a community of strong, like-minded women is empowering. It's about lifting each other up, celebrating successes, and navigating challenges together.
LR: Absolutely. How has being part of these groups impacted your day-to-day experience?
PL: It's made me feel more connected, despite working remotely. We engage not just on a professional level but on personal interests too, like music through affinity groups like JAMS. It's refreshing to have conversations that go beyond work and connect on a human level.
LR: You mentioned music. What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of work?
PL: I'm an avid reader, a beach lover, and what my friends call a "sky girl" because I'm fascinated by the stars and sunsets. Travel is also a big passion of mine. I’m also a huge football girl–I love our Jags! And of course, I love music—I play guitar and enjoy singing karaoke whenever I get the chance!
LR: That's fantastic! It seems like you have a diverse set of interests. How do you balance these with your professional life?
PL: Finding that balance is key, and Newfold's supportive culture makes it easier. Whether it's joining affinity groups or pursuing personal hobbies, I feel encouraged to be myself and explore my passions.
LR: That's wonderful to hear, Paola. Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience at Newfold or your journey thus far?
PL: I just want to emphasize how grateful I am for the opportunities and support I've received at Newfold. It's not just a workplace; it's a community that values diversity, growth, and personal well-being. I hope more organizations can foster such a positive environment.

The event took place online and offline, bridging the gap between those who could attend in person and those who joined from their homes. In total, 12 members joined us at our cozy offline venue, while another 15 members logged in from various corners of Europe to be part of the fun.
With a hybrid setup, the organizers had gone above and beyond to create an atmosphere where everyone felt included and appreciated. A highlight of the day was an engaging a Kahoot game played online, with everyone laughing and cheering as they tested their knowledge and quick thinking. And, of course, we had three awesome winners. Who won a nice milkshake glass with a nice, cute purple duck.
But the joy didn’t stop there. We also shared goodie bags to celebrate our community's creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. These bags were filled with treasures from small businesses owned by women in Wijchen, The Netherlands—, where the Yoast offices are located. This was our way of giving back to these entrepreneurial women.
It was a lovely event to see part of our WIN Europe community in real-life, and meet a bunch of them online. We are looking forward to our next event in October when everyone’s refreshed after the summer break.

My name is Tobin and I'm a Senior Sales Manager for our Network Solutions/Register brands. I'm excited to share my "good news" with you all and can imagine that some of you can relate! We made it through another summer! Despite the hot temperatures in Texas, we beat the heat! The kids stayed active, happy and healthy and have returned to school yesterday to embark on another school year. I am beyond grateful for the work life balance afforded to me to work from home and cherish the extra moments I got to spend with my kiddos this summer. Thank you, NEWFOLD!! To all of the mothers, fathers, guardians and/or caregivers, I hope everyone has a great school year and I'll see you next year, Summer break!

I recently taught myself how to save hundreds annually by learning to groom my doodles at home. It wasn't as hard as I thought it was going to be with the help of a few Youtube videos and the collapsible dog grooming table and clippers I found on Amazon for around $250. I would have easily spent that in just 2 grooming visits and I am now saving about $700 a year which is good news!

My good news is that I spent my vacation in Las Vegas with my brothers and their families seeing Dead & Company at Sphere. It was fantastic to see the amazing spectacle that is a show at Sphere, especially a Dead show. We had a great time together despite the 105+ degree temperatures.

A big accomplishment for me was making Team Indigenous Rising Roller Derby.
When I started Roller Derby, I dreamed of skating for this team. I will be representing them and my Nation (Kingdom of Hawai'i) in next year’s Roller Derby World Cup in Austria, July 2025.

When my sister and I were younger my parents would take us camping every year in California. But as we grew older and I moved away, life kind of just happened and the tradition stopped. This year, however, my sister who still lives in California organized a camping trip for us to Yosemite. We went hiking, bike riding, floated down the river, cooked and hung out around the campfire. It was so much fun! Then one morning I woke up to a familiar smell. It was pancakes. But not just any pancakes. They were my mom’s famous blueberry pancakes. My mom would only make them when we were camping as part of the camping tradition. I hadn’t had them in ages. I was thrilled but was also in total disbelief because I couldn’t believe my sister found the recipe. It was the best part of the trip because it was so thoughtful and reminded me of fond childhood memories. I will always remember that trip and be appreciative of how my sister made that trip so special. By the way, those pancakes were just like how I remembered them…delicious!

I just finished knitting my first dog sweater. Unfortunately, she is going to outgrow it soon.

My daughter starts college next week. Move in date is Sunday. She is going to Embry Riddle to study mechanical engineering and play on the Women’s Golf Team. So proud of her.
