SPRING DECLUTTERING FUN
01 MAR 2024 | TRACY DEFFENBAUGH
You know what time it is...
In December, the FIT@Newfold group held a decluttering event that piqued my interest and ended up truly inspiring me. Each day brought a new task, encouraging participants to tackle specific areas and items. While I was unable to do it on some of the days it was great to see what was next, how I felt about that area/space and if there were things to get rid of. It was a lot of fun, very cathartic, plus it sparked conversations with others and motivated many to purge and simplify. We chatted on the great ideas it was for the day, how we sent our items to goodwill centers, shelters, and food pantries, and more. The act of decluttering became a mini network event and a meaningful gesture, bringing decluttering to top of mind and contributing to our communities.
Entering the new year, the decluttering momentum carried on for me into 2024. Now, as spring approaches, it is the perfect time to revisit the idea of decluttering. Spring cleaning is not just about dusting and organizing; it is an opportunity to reassess the possessions that surround us (physical, digital, mental, etc.). Take a closer look and ask yourself whether every item truly adds value to your life.
Here are a few tips to guide you through your spring decluttering journey:
Assess Each Area
Start room by room, assessing the items you have. Identify what you use regularly, what holds sentimental value, and what can be released.
The Joy Test
Marie Kondo's famous "joy test" can be a helpful criterion. Hold each item in your hands and consider whether it sparks joy. If not, it might be time to part ways.
Donate or Recycle
Just like the FIT@Newfold event, consider donating items in good condition to goodwill centers, shelters, or food pantries. Recycling is another eco-friendly option.
Mindful Purchases
Going forward, adopt a mindful approach to your purchases. Before acquiring something new, think about its utility and whether it aligns with your values.
Digital Declutter
Extend your decluttering efforts to the digital realm. Clean up your emails, organize your digital files, and streamline your online presence.
